02 · HOW TO MIX

Mixing a 10 mg vial with 3 mL of BAC water

Using a 1 mL (100-unit) insulin syringe, 3 full draws of bacteriostatic water gives 3.33 mg/mL.

Add the water slowly
Wipe both rubber stoppers with an alcohol swab and let them dry. Draw 3 mL of bacteriostatic water and let it run slowly down the inside of the vial wall — not straight onto the powder.

Swirl gently
Swirl or roll the vial gently until the powder has dissolved. Give it a few minutes to settle if needed.

Don't shake it
Shaking can damage the peptide and cause foaming. Gentle swirling only.

Check it's fully clear
Only use it once it is fully clear with no particles. Label the vial with the date and 3.33 mg/mL, then store it in the fridge at 2–8 °C.

Storage

How it works

Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone and a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist. Melanocortin signalling can increase melanin production, which is why it has been studied for pigmentation.

Melanocortin signalling can also affect sexual response. In small human research, spontaneous erections and increased sexual desire were reported, which are effects rather than established therapeutic benefits.

What the research shows

A 1996 phase-I study involved 3 healthy men given subcutaneous Melanotan II on weekdays for 2 weeks; two showed increased pigmentation one week after dosing ended. The doses were weight-based and are not the chart source.
In a double-blind crossover study of 20 men with erectile dysfunction, 17 had an erection without sexual stimulation after Melanotan II; 13 of 19 doses were followed by increased sexual desire, versus 4 of 21 placebo doses.
At 0.025 mg/kg in that 20-person study, 12.9% of subjects had severe nausea. These small early studies do not establish a cosmetic-use dose or safety profile.
The TGA says Melanotan is not approved for sale or use as a tanning agent in Australia and has not been assessed for quality or safety.

Reported side effects

The TGA lists headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and facial redness as common effects reported with melanotan products.
In the 3-person phase-I study, mild nausea occurred at most dose levels; one of two participants at 0.03 mg/kg had Grade II sleepiness and fatigue.
The 20-man crossover study reported nausea and yawning frequently; at 0.025 mg/kg, 12.9% of participants had severe nausea.
Case reports include low-flow priapism requiring aspiration, irrigation and phenylephrine after abdominal subcutaneous melanotan use, and systemic toxicity with rhabdomyolysis after a confirmed 6 mg Melanotan II injection.

Important notes

Melanotan is not approved for sale or use as a tanning agent in Australia; the TGA says these products have not been assessed for quality or safety.
The TGA identifies serious skin cancers as its most concerning risk and reports increased moles and freckles with Melanotan II, as well as reports of kidney dysfunction and swelling of the brain.
No tan protects against UV damage. The TGA says artificially increased pigmentation from melanotan is not a substitute for sunscreen.
Athletes should treat Melanotan II as prohibited at all times under WADA S0 because it has no current approval by a governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use.
Never use a mixed vial that is cloudy or has particles in it.

Injection basics

Use a new sterile 1 mL (100-unit) U-100 insulin syringe, 27–31G, every time — never reuse or share.
Wipe the vial stopper and the skin with an alcohol swab and let both dry first.
Inject under the skin (subcutaneously) of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, and rotate sites.
Put used syringes straight into an approved sharps container — the NDSS lists Australian disposal options.

Is the maintenance reference amount daily?

No. The attributed chart changes after week 8 to 500–1,000 mcg on 1–2 occasions weekly, rather than daily. This is a reference-site example, not approved instructions.
